Whilst learnt as a level flight manoeuvre, fighter a/c are capable of performing the slow roll during a climb.
SLOW ROLL IN LEVEL FLIGHT CHECKLIST
- PERFORM HASELL CHECKS
- ESTABLISH HEADING AND ALTITUDE
- ESTABLISH CRUISE SPEED
- PITCH UP 5 DEGREES
This is to help compensate for the loss of lift which will be experienced during the inverted portion of the manoeuvre. - APPLY GRADUAL LEFT AILERON
- APPLY RIGHT RUDDER
To compensate for nose drop as bank angle approaches 90 degrees
- APPLY FORWARD STICK AS NECESSARY
To maintain heading and level flight - Continuing roll:
APPLY LEFT RUDDER - As level flight is attained
CENTRALISE CONTROLS - CHECK HEADING
- NOTE ALTITUDE
Most common faults during a slow roll:
- Poor control of direction (Heading) during the manoeuvre.
- Failure to apply enough forward stick when inverted, resulting in nose drop.
- Failure to maintain aileron deflection when inverted, resulting in cessation of the roll and nose drop occuring.
